Grilled avocado, tomato, and cheese sandwich

Here is a quick sandwich to put together when you're hungry and wanting something filling and delicious.

You'll need the following:

-Daiya Brand Cheese
-Bread: I like Vermont Brand Bread from Whole Foods. Specifically, the Organic Soft Multigrain, 7 Whole Grain Bread. Their sliced bread is vegan. I checked with them.
-Tomato: Campari tomatoes are so delicious (cherry tomatoes work too)
-Avocado
-Veganiase or any vegan mayo type spread.

Just put it all together and cook on very low heat. Daiya cheese does take a little longer than cow based cheeses to melt. This may also cook well in a sandwich maker. The thing to remember is to press the top bread down firmly so the contents stay inside since it is a packed sandwich.

Since you most likely won't be using the whole avocado in the sandwich, you can cut the remaining portion and put some veganaise on it and eat as a side dish. Might as well since avocados don't usually last long once it's cut open.

Enjoy!

Everlasting Life Health Complex: Vegan Soul Food

The restaurant as soon as you walk in. The deli is in the back.

Had to go into DC today to run an errand and so I decided to treat myself to some vegan gourmet food while I was there. But from where? I decided to look up some vegan places on Google. That's when I came across Everlasting Life Health Complex.

They're located on Georgia Avenue near the Exodus Vegan Soul Food place. The guy working there was so nice and helpful. He gave me a sample of all of their popular dishes (this was before he knew I was going to blog about it).
EVERYTHING they serve is vegan.

Their cold food deli and hot food bar was so delicious looking and they had such a huge variety. I felt like a kid in a candy store! I decided on the large side of the mac n' cheese and small sides of the garlic kale and tofu-spinach quiche. Their hot food entrees consisted of pepper steak and orange chicken. Both were very good but I'm not very much into mock meats. The hot food bar also had cabbage, broccoli, brown rice, and lentils. Their menu items change daily. Their eggplant parmesan is a must try!!

The cold food deli consisted of too many things to mention here. They had 2 different flavored kale, macaroni salad, potato salad, quiche, shredded bean curd, sesame tofu, corn-bean salad, etc.

They had a small but very delicious looking variety of desserts: frosted cinnamon rolls, oatmeal raisin cookie, and lemon cake (I bought the lemon cake and it was the perfect amount of sweetness, a nice amount of frosting, and not one bit dry).

The prices were incredible! My total came to right under $20 and I got all this:

The guy who helped me said his brother owns the place and they had been going through some renovations and still are and so a lot of people thought the place wasn't open. I really hope this small local business is successful. Whoever reads this post, please make it a point to stop by and show your support. Take friends/family with you. You won't regret it! Oh and they have a loyalty card, which will get stamped every time you come in and order food. Eventually it leads towards a discount (I think he said $8) off of an order.

Brunch at Sticky Fingers Bakery

Brunch at Sticky Fingers is a luxury that I rarely get to enjoy. The reasons for this is it's located in DC and getting into DC (especially Columbia Heights where Sticky Fingers is located) is such a pain in the butt! Also, I'm usually so busy during the weekends that I don't have time for it. FORTUNATELY, Sticky Fingers brunch is every Saturday and Sunday from 8/9 am to 2:30pm. This place has the best hours for vegan brunch than any other place I've seen in this area.

French Toast with tofu scrambles and potatoes

You can choose pancakes, biscuits and gravy, or french toast. You can get a la carte or as a platter ($10). The platter includes a side of tofu scrambles, which is quite delicious and a side of home style potatoes, which also is very delicious. My favorite is the french toast platter. I love to douse the whole platter with maple syrup. If you're not feeling like brunch, there are plenty of lunch items to choose from: grilled cheese, tuna melt, quesadilla, nachos, chili dogs, chicken sandwich, and many other variety of sandwiches. Btw, they solely use Daiya cheese, the best kind, as their vegan cheese.

Tuna Melt with onions and avocado

Sticky Fingers also offers a huge variety of baked goods, chips, drinks, candy, pre-made sandwiches/food (lasagna, chicken wings, mac n' cheese), etc, etc.

Sorry for the pictures of the half eaten food. As soon as the food arrives, I'm usually so excited, I tend to forget to take pictures of it til midway through :-P
